Music + Art

Description:

The intermingling of various forms of art has long been an interest of Ms. Choi. How do the different mediums interact and influence each other? Both the pieces of music on this program were chosen because of their highly evocative nature. The impressionistic Debussy Sonata is full of tone painting, changing textures and colors. Piazzolla's programmatic L'Histoire du Tango has an added element of alluding to the evolution of a dance genre.

In this art + music experiment, we will explore how these two pieces of music might spawn works of visual art and how the resulting paintings might then inform the performance, and perhaps even the hearing of the music by the audience.

The project will unfold in 4 stages:
1. Musicians rehearse and record, the painter will attend some rehearsals and be given the resulting recording.
2. The painter will go into the studio and work, listening to the music as he sees fit.
3. The resulting painting/paintings are shown to the musicians and discussed.
4. Concert and art viewing.
