American Masterworks: Two Virtuoso Pianists/Composers

Description:

This series will focus on two major works by two important American composers who are also virtuoso pianists; David Del Tredici and Frederic Rzewski. Each of these composers has written a large scale work for piano that has an American theme and that exploits the technical boundaries of the instrument.

In 2004 David Del Tredici wrote Gotham Glory which is a piece about New York City. Each of the four movements depicts a certain aspect of the city; the West Village, the museums, the lost Trade Center Towers and finally to the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park.

Frederic Rzewski's work Four North American Ballads is based on various protest songs from the early twentieth - century. Like the Del Tredici piece, the ballads are highly virtuosic and tell a story about hope and struggle.

The Del Tredici work will be preceded by a short lecture/demonstration on the history of depicting locations in music and of the virtuoso pianist/composer.

The Rzewski work will be preceded by a short lecture/demonstration on the history of labor and protest music.

The goal in this series is to bring the community closer to such monumental works of our period and to come to a deeper understanding of the process that goes into the creation of such works.
