Elizabeth Brown, shakuhachi

The music of composer/performer Elizabeth Brown has been heard in Japan, the Soviet Union, Colombia, Australia and Vietnam as well as across the US and Europe. A 2007 Guggenheim Foundation Fellow, she has also received grants, awards and commissions from Orpheus, St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, Newband, Barlow Foundation, Cary Trust, Asian Cultural Council and NYFA. After receiving a Master's degree in flute performance from The Juilliard School in 1977, she started composing in the late 70's, and now combines a composing career with an active life as a performer; in addition to flute, she plays shakuhachi, theremin, and dan bau (Vietnamese monochord).
