Third Annual Violafest

Description:

The third year of viola concerts at Bloomingdale will focus on works that are now played on viola, but were written originally for exotic string instruments. The program will feature Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata, Bach's Sixth Cello Suite, and Telemann's Fantasia in D major. Each work has become a standard part of the viola repertoire, but was originally composed for an instrument that no longer exists. The Arpeggione Sonata was written for a bowed guitar (now extinct) called the arpeggione. The Sixth Cello suite was actually written for what was called a "violoncello piccolo," and Telemann's Fantasia was written for a viola da gamba. The program will include pictures and descriptions of these instruments.
