125th Birthday: Igor
Stravinsky, 1882–1971
Description:
This concert celebrates the 125th birthday of Stravinsky with
a presentation of the works for violin and piano. This music
owes its existence to the violinist Samuel Dushkin, who commissioned
the Violin Concerto and subsequently became a close collaborator
and concert partner of Stravinsky. The Duo
Concertante was
written to provide material for their concerts and the two
worked closely on the duos inspired by Stravinsky's ballets:
Suite Italienne (Pulcinella), Divertimento (The Fairy's Kiss)
and the three pieces from The Firebird.
Violinist Rolf Schulte and pianist Judith Olson have both had
a long association with the violin/piano duos of Stravinsky.
In addition, Mr. Schulte has performed the Violin
Concerto several times under the baton
of Stravinsky's long time associate Robert Craft. Ms. Olson's
piano teacher at Juilliard, Beveridge Webster, enjoyed a long
musical partnership with Stravinsky, including performances
of the Concerto
for Two Solo Pianos with Stravinsky at
the second piano and a composer-supervised recording of the
complete solo piano music. Stravinsky and Webster were also
friends in private life and frequent partners/rivals at the
bridge table, Ms. Olson was treated to some pretty colorful
stories as well as first-hand tips on style and interpretation.
