Tableaux for Four

Description:

Employing a large array of instruments is one means composers have of coloring their works in detail. But what if the composer is limited to only a few timbres?

Camille Saint-Saens charming Tarantelle shows the wit and flourish of a Parisian master. The three performers are called upon to play virtuosically in this urbane reworking of the frenetic Italian dance.

Upon hearing the premiere of Rene de Castera's Concert for Flute, Clarinet, Cello and Piano in 1922 a reviewer wrote, The scent of the soil of southwestern France arises. De Castera was heavily involved in the musical life of his native Basque region, and this work succeeds in evoking the character of both French and Spanish music.

Bruce Broughton has won a record 10 Emmy awards for his television scores, but he also composes highly evocative concert music. A Primer For Malachi, written for the birth of the composer's grandson, traces the stages of life. Instruments recombine in various configurations as themes are introduced as first haltingly, then with greater assurance as maturity approaches.

Maria Grenfell's work takes much of its influence from poetic, literary and visual sources and from non-Western music and literature. Poems of a Bright Moon was inspired by the songs of Li Po, an 8th-century Chinese poet. The moon appears in over a third of his poems, and the composer writes that she found the opportunity to combine Li Po's images of moonlight with the rich dark tones of the alto flute irresistible.
