A4TY: Album for the Young, Vol. II: Student New Music Project

Description:

For pre-college aged music students the composer is perhaps the most remote figure in the musical process, either a famous name from the history books or little more than an afterthought. Likewise, composers rarely have the opportunity to work with young, enthusiastic performers whose tastes and habits are still developing. For both students and composers it can be revelatory to see up close the process of creating and preparing a piece of music. This project seeks to bring these two groups into direct contact and to open a window for each into the other's working methods and creative process.

The Student New Music Project will commission two composers to each write a new work for one of the Bloomingdale School of Music ensembles. These works will then be prepared by the ensemble for a concert, each under the direction of faculty directors. Additionally, there will be a call for scores from students in the Bloomingdale community. This effort will be supplemented by directly contacting teachers regarding promising student composers in their studios. A final concert given by student ensembles will feature the two commissioned works and all selected student works.
