Piano Dance: Baroque to Boogie

Description:

This concert is a sampler of the most pedagogically relevant dance forms in keyboard music. Dance has historically been a major inspiration for composers, and since piano students are enthusiastic about learning and performing dance music, this event provides a colorful, fun music history lesson. Ideally, all music student should attend classical concerts and listen to recordings of great music. Realistically, most have very limited exposure. This is an opportunity for students to hear small pieces by the most famous composers and to become acquainted with the most popular dance forms.

The program begins with Baroque dances and concludes with Morton Gould's Boogie-Woogie Etude played on two pianos by six pianists. it is organized by dance forms, not always chronology as, of course, composers frequently write in early dance forms. A few pieces will be added for humor and attention-grabbing titles, such as Antheil's Percussion Dance from "The Woman with 100 Heads."
