Canadian pianist, Penny Johnson, holds a
Doctor of Musical arts degree (DMA) in Piano Performance
from the Manhattan School of Music, where she was a student
of Constance Keene. Prior studies include a Master
of Music degree (MM), and a Bachelor of Music degree (BM)
with high distinction, from the Eastman School of Music,
under the tutelage of Barry Snyder. Johnson has received
numerous scholarships and fellowships from both institutions,
and was most recently awarded the Helen Cohn award, given
to an outstanding graduate of the doctoral program at the
Manhattan School of Music. She has also been awarded
several grants from the government of Canada.
Johnson has performed both as a soloist and collaborative
pianist, in recitals and master classes in North America
and Europe, for such outstanding artists as Idil Biret, Marc
Durand, Anton Kuerti, André Laplante, and Renna Kellaway. She
is particularly devoted to the keyboard music of J. S. Bach,
and has performed the composer's final, enigmatic work, Art
of Fugue. Most recently, the ending that she
composed for this unfinished work, was added to the collection
at the International Piano Archive at the University of Maryland. Johnson
also holds a deep appreciation for historic recordings, having
written her doctoral dissertation on the Polish pianist,
Ignacy Jan Paderewski.
Johnson is the newest member of the piano faculty at the
Amati Conservatory, and also teaches through Music to Your
Home. She has taught piano at the Long Island Conservatory,
in addition to the Manhattan School of Music, and has taught
piano literature and theory at the Eastman School of Music. In
addition to her work as a teacher, Johnson is a vocal accompanist
at the Manhattan School of Music, and has served as staff
accompanist at the Eastman School of Music, as well as the
International Workshops, in Graz, Austria.
An avid sports fan, Johnson plays ice hockey, football,
and baseball, and loves to watch old movies. Johnson
is happy to be performing for you this evening with Yuko
and Wei, and sincerely hopes that you enjoy the cool music! |
