| Trombonist, euphonium player and composer
Rafi Malkiel is an active player in both the jazz and Latin
scenes in New York City. Leading his quintet, Rafi plays
original compositions as well as unique arrangements fusing
jazz and Latin-American standards with Afro-Cuban rhythms.
He has toured around the world with artists such as Reggie
Workman, Arnie Lawrence, the Jason Lindner Big Band, Bobby
Short, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra, to name a few. He
has performed in venues such as Madison Square Garden, Radio
City Music Hall, Town Hall, Symphony Space, Sweet Basil,
SOB's, and Small's. Rafi has participated in numerous festivals
including the JVC Jazz Festival, Lincoln Center Out of Doors,
and Summer Stage in New York City; WOMAD festivals in Greece,
New Zealand, and Australia, and the Red Sea International
Jazz Festival in Israel. Rafi has recorded over twenty albums
with artists including Grammy award winner Lauryn Hill, Colombian
singer Toto La Momposina, Ray Anderson, Loren Schoenberg
and His Jazz Orchestra, and Salsa Picante. He has also played
on Broadway in the Tony-award winning musical Urinetown.
Currently a member of Arturo O'farrill's group Riza Negra,
Salsa Picante and the Colombian jazz band Folkore Urbano,
Rafi is completing his own debut CD of original material
to be released in 2005. He was featured in the New York Post
in the article The Young Guns of Jazz, trumpeting the
best of a new generation, by Chip Deffaa, July 2001,
and also mentioned in the Recommended Jazz Trombonists list
in the PBS website Jazz, a film by Ken Burns. |
