Ike Sturm, bass

Ike Sturm is a bassist and composer in Brooklyn, NY. He serves as the music director for jazz at Saint Peter’s Church in Manhattan, the “Jazz Church,” where he performs and composes original music for weekly jazz services.He has been fortunate to perform with Gene Bertoncini, Donny McCaslin, Bobby McFerrin, Ben Monder, Ingrid Jensen, Maria Schneider, Kenny Wheeler and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. He has played on four “Downbeat” award-winning recordings as well as composer Steve Reich’s releases on Canteloupe and Nonesuch Records. Ike studied jazz and classical bass and composition while earning Bachelors and Masters degrees at the Eastman School of Music. In 1999, he was privileged to study with legendary bassist Dave Holland. Ike was recently commissioned to compose a jazz mass for 50 voices, strings and sextet. He is currently recording the work, planned for release in 2008 and featuring Misty Ann Sturm, Ingrid Jensen, Loren Stillman, Ryan Ferreira, Adam Benjamin, Ted Poor, and Grammy award-winning soloist Donny McCaslin.
