"I strive to create a nurturing environment when teaching music."
Having begun music lessons at age three, Shahla Atlas truly understands the importance of an early introduction to music. "Sitting at the piano is one of my earliest memories, so it is an instrument that I have always had a special relationship with." At age eleven Shahla began studying clarinet which she went on to pursue as a performance major at The Juilliard School. A New York City native, Shahla has had a diverse music career, performing throughout the city as a soloist, with bands and "even as a DJ from time to time."
"I strive to create a nurturing environment when teaching music," says Shahla of her approach to early childhood education. She also emphasizes humor to "set students at ease in the classroom. I believe one is much more inclined to excel musically if they feel they are part of a teacher-student relationship built on mutual respect." At Bloomingdale, Shahla works with students ages 6 and younger. "I enjoy teaching children under the age of six most. When working with a young child, I try to draw on my own past musical experiences. I often use pretend play or other imaginative techniques to reach the heart of a younger one."
Shahla's favorite composers include Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Debussy and Ravel. She also enjoys a wide range of musical styles including folk, rock, and electronica. As a musician Shahla is most influenced "by young children and their free-spirited approach to music and life."
