"Being able to help motivated and ambitious students develop and seeing their own excitement is the best thing about teaching."
Christopher Cullen’s introduction to clarinet was definitely unique. “I wanted to play the trumpet and I confused the clarinet with the coronet.” Nevertheless, as a nine-year old, Chris did indeed begin learning clarinet in Mamaroneck, New York where he grew up.

Chris’ teaching style emphasizes fundamentals such as good technique, rhythm, and fluent music reading. “Once the basics are established, I help students imagine how a good singer would approach a phrase. This can be the doorway to real music making.” Chris works with children, nine and older, and adults. He believes that since adults are studying entirely by choice and devotion, it’s important to work on music that interests them. As a Bloomingdale faculty member, Chris has found that “my experience with almost every student has been rewarding and memorable. Being able to help motivated and ambitious students develop and seeing their own excitement is the best thing about teaching.”

Although Chris is open to listening to and playing all types of music, he most enjoys performing chamber music. He can be heard frequently in performance at Bloomingdale as a member of Circadia. “Bloomingdale has been very generous in creating performance opportunities for its faculty, and being able to develop programs and perform in such a welcoming community is a cherished aspect of my career.”

In his free time, Chris pursues an interest in carpentry and enjoys playing with his daughter.
