Gunhild Glass, piano and harpsichord

B.M., Oberlin Conservatory
"I strive to generate a love for music and pride in developing musical skills.”
Gunhild Glass was born in Cristobal, Panama and grew up in Vienna, Austria. Her family later relocated to New York City after World War II. She began studying piano at age 4 because “we had a piano at home and I liked to explore the instrument.”

As a teacher Gunhild strives to “generate a love for music and pride in developing musical skills.” She emphasizes the importance of reading music which enables her students to constantly advance to more challenging levels. With her younger students, Gunhild incorporates rote methods, singing familiar tunes and clapping rhythm into their lessons. With adult students, Gunhild matches her teaching style to each student’s ability level and musical goals.

As a harpsichordist, Gunhild has a special affinity for composers of the Baroque period. She most enjoys performing works by Baroque French and German composers. In addition to attending Oberlin, Gunhild also studied with Bruno Seidelhofer and Rosalyn Turek. In Vienna, Gunhild worked with harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt “one of my major musical influences.” She cites a performance of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 on harpsichord with the Vienna Akademie Orchestra as one of the highlights of her career.

A teacher at Bloomingdale for over 25 years, one of Gunhild’s favorite memories is her performance of Ponce’s Concerto for Guitar and Harpsichord at the school. In her free time, Gunhild enjoys cooking, baking and gardening.
