“I try to discover what draws each student to music, and build upon their natural inclinations.”
Pianist Kirsten Olafson began taking piano lessons as a youngster in British Columbia, Canada, later moving to New York to study with Gilbert Kalish at SUNY Stony Brook. “I try to discover what draws each student to music, and build upon their natural inclinations,” says Kirsten of her approach to teaching. She is an energetic and compassionate teacher whose students range in age from six to adult.

A member of the Bloomingdale faculty since Fall 2003, one of her fondest experiences at the school to date was the Spring 2004 Performathon. “I appreciated that so much of the administration was present for the entire day and of course I loved watching my students perform.”

Kirsten cites Schumann and Bach as two of her favorite composers, but enjoys performing a diverse range of musical styles. Although she is a frequent solo performer, Kirsten says that her favorite type of musical performances is chamber music. “I enjoy the interchange of musical ideas.”

Gilbert Kalish and Leon Fleischer have been two of Kirsten’s major musical influences. She also draws inspiration from the writings of Ranier Maria Rilke. When she is not teaching or playing the piano, Kirsten pursues a wide array of hobbies including vegan cooking, running, yoga, and installing electrical fixtures.
