STUDENT REVIEW
by Michael Stanger
Bloomingdale percussion student

The Bloomingdale School of Music has been an asylum for many bands including mine. The Battle of the Bands has been the most anticipated event of the year for the bands that participate in it. Matt Gold, the percussion teacher, put it together for his students as a way for them to have fun and perform their music. It is a competition, but because it is mainly friends competing against each other, it is more of a chance to share our music than it is to compete… (Although some of the bands don't exactly feel that way). This was the third Battle of the Bands that we have had and I have taken part in all three. I have seen the bands improve and the crowds grow since the beginning.

The show started out with Cardinal Dred and the Honkies, which I was a part of (this is the part where I try to be an impartial critic). I think the Honkies did a good job performing, and since the point of this is more to have fun than to win, I think they were the most fun.

The next band was No Ticket, my other band (I have to be impartial on this also). They came with many people not expecting too much, but they also came with a new and improved sound. This was the first time that it seemed that they knew the parts to their songs and the first time that they played them together. They were the most improved band of the night.

The third band was an un-named blues trio with Bloomingdale's own Asher Kelly-Knacht on piano, Ben Spinrad on drums and Felix Thompson on guitar. They were probably the most skilled musicians there, but because of lack of time to prepare they didn't win. They were amazing for only having 45 minutes of practice, and were the most impressive of the night.

The Floor

The fourth band was Finding Euphoria, formerly known as Web of Distortion. They strayed from their original punk-pop sound and played an electrifying set with three brand new songs. This is one of the more talented bands there because not only are the three members excellent musicians, they are also each very good singers. This band displayed the most overall talent.

The fifth and final band was The Floor who won the Battle of the Bands with a massive set of four songs and then an encore. They were, stylistically, the most metal band of the bunch and included a guest rapper for one of their songs. Obviously they are talented because they won, but after seeing their performance on the first song, I am awarding them both the scariest band of the night and the best stage presence.

If you haven't already guessed I'm trying to make everyone out to be a winner, not just because my bands lost, but because this is more for the contestants to have fun than anything else. This was the third Battle of the Bands at Bloomingdale and I look forward to many more.
