Mary Lee Pincus, Composition and Piano Student
Composition and piano student Mary Lee Pincus discovers
new music by “searching the Internet, going to live
shows and concerts, and through recommendations from friends.
Sometimes I come across new artists and recordings by chance.” Mary
listens to diverse styles of music from R&B/soul to
jazz and classical. “I appreciate music that tells
a story both lyrically and compositionally. I admire artists
who are edgy and unpredictable, with distinct personal
style and connection to their material and the audience.” |

Artist: Robert Taub
Album: Scriabin: 10 Piano Sonatas
Why Mary like this particular artist/album: Scriabin is one
of my favorites—his works are an inspiration for me as
a composer. The depth of colors and emotions in these sonatas
is brilliant. Robert Taub handles each sonata with crystal
clarity, grace, and apparent ease. Taub's dynamic and energetic
style is well matched with Scriabin's attention to detail.
This really makes the sonatas come to life! I recommend getting
all 10 sonatas on this 2-disc recording.
Favorite track(s) on the album: Sonatas 5 and 6
Artist: Tori Amos
Album: American Doll Posse
Why you like this particular artist/album: Tori Amos is such
an amazing singer/songwriter. Her latest release is assertive
and full of great lyrics that marry a variety of musical
styles. Seeing her perform this album gave me an appreciation
of her theatrical style and creative use of the piano. I
admire how she continues to re-invent herself.
Favorite track(s) on the album: “Big Wheel” and “Teenage
Hustling”
Artist: Andre Previn and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Album: Holst: The Planets
Why you like this particular artist/album: Holst's legendary
seven-movement suite has influenced many popular works of
today. This excellent recording by Andre Previn and the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra really highlights the majestic nature
of this epic piece. I continue to hear something new with
every listen. The way Holst defines each planet is very fluid
and atmospheric. I particularly like the instrumentation
and use of female choir to tell a cosmic story. Upon seeing
The Planets live for the first time at Carnegie Hall with
the Philadelphia Orchestra, I am amazed at the power of this
work.
Favorite track(s) on the album: “Venus, the Bringer
of Peace” and “Neptune, the Mystic”
Artist: Jonathan Faiman
Album: Hie Up The Mountain
Why you like this particular artist/album: As my teacher
of piano and composition, Jonathan Faiman is an inspiration.
His album for solo piano showcases original works by living
composers. The pieces are performed with sparkling precision,
exuberance, and show great range. I particularly like the
combination of classical refinement with a modern twist.
Favorite track(s) on the album: “Five Vaults” and “Maracaibo” |
