Julia Lo, flute student

Bloomingdale Project Bridge flute student Julia Lo says she is drawn to discover artists who are "passionate about what they do, who have some kind of original spark or charming demeanor." As the daughter of a jazz musician, Julia caught on to a lot of great jazz standards at a young age, and she now enjoys hunting for great new music by listening to Pandora Radio (a free internet service that chooses music for you based on what you like) and by checking out the opening acts at concerts by familiar bands.

Julia recommends the following artists and albums, which you might find on her track list on any given day, to "people who like nice songs and happy music. Or Harry Potter."

Artist: Sondre Lerche
Album: Dan In Real Life (soundtrack)
Why Julia likes it: Lerche is a lovable folk/jazz/pop singer/songwriter/guitarist from Norway. What more can anyone ask for? I am completely smitten with Lerche and his effortlessly smooth voice. This album is really sweet, with charming lyrics and sunny melodies that make me smile.
Favorite tracks on the album: "To Be Surprised", "Hell No", fun and quirky take of "Human Hands"

Artist: Ra Ra Riot
Album: The Rhumb Line
Why Julia likes it: Deemed "chamber rock" by loyal music bloggers, Ra Ra Riot combines standard rock band textures with string instrumental pieces to create heartfelt songs with orchestral conventions. Lead singer Wesley Miles's voice is indiscernibly scruffy in a a sweet and romantic way.
Favorite tracks on the album: "Can You Tell", "St. Peter's Day Festival", "Suspended in Gaffa"

Artist: Chick Corea
Album: Expressions
Why Julia likes it: Every note is meaningful with Corea. His music is rich and lush and breathtaking--everyone needs to experience Expressions, at least twenty-seven times. It's one of those albums that gets better the more times you listen to it.
Favorite tracks on the album: "Lush Life", "This Nearly Was Mine", "My Ship", "Pannonica"

Artist: Lauryn Hill
Album: Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Why Julia likes it: This is Lauryn Hill as Lauryn Hill. Straight from the glory days of old school Hip-Hop/R&B, Hill's voice is edgy and still enchanting to the ear. This album is full of teenage thrills with a back-in-the-day street-smart style. I've been listening to this since I was a kid.
Favorite tracks on the album: "Lost Ones", "Doo Wop (That Thing)", "Nothing Even Matters"

Artist: Harry and the Potters
Album: Harry and the Potters and the Power of Love
Why Julia likes it: Although the songs may not be musically stimulating, the lyrics are strictly about Harry Potter. Moreover, the band members (who coincidentally are brothers) legitimately believe that they both are Harry Potter.
Favorite tracks on the album: "Wizard Rock Anthem", "Song For The Death Eaters", "This Book Is So Awesome"
