Granados and Albéniz. These are the composers most frequently associated with classical piano music from Spain. Spain, however, has an immense history of music written for the keyboard, stretching from the Golden Age of the Renaissance to the modern day. Certainly it is the nationalist music of Enrique Granados and Isaac Albéniz that is most well-known with iconic piano works such as Goyescas, España, and Iberia. But there is also the music of Antonio de Cabezón, Padre Antonio Soler, Manuel de Falla, Oscar Espla, Federico Mompou, Joaquín Rodrigo, and Joaquín Turina, to name just a few.

The Bloomingdale Piano Project Sonidos de España/Sounds of Spain will celebrate the music of a wide range of composers, allowing audience members the opportunity to hear an evolution of Spanish musical tradition. The influence of Spanish music on other European composers, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries will also be explored through the works of composers such as Ravel, Debussy, and Szymanowski. The two concerts held on March 15, 2008 will feature Bloomingdale's piano faculty and students. Online features will be presented monthly beginning in November, providing background information on specific composers and pieces that will be part of the program. Make sure to check back each month for features!
