Project 2008 HISTORICAL TIMELINE —Bathsheba Marcus Conley 1212: The Moorish rule in Spain ends with the decisive victory of the Christians at the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. 1469: Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon marry and unite their two kingdoms. 1492: King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella capture Granada and mark the final defeat of the Moors in Spain. As part of the Inquisition that began in 1478, in 1492 Jews are given the ultimatum to either convert to Christianity or leave Spain. Christopher Columbus sails for the new world and claims America for Spain, which sets the scene for Spain to create an empire over the next century. 1516: When King Ferdinand dies, the Spanish Crown goes to Charles I, later named Charles V Holy Roman Emperor. His reign marks the beginning of the Hapsburg rule of Spain. 1588: The defeat of the Spanish Armada by Britain. 1702-14: The War of Spanish Succession takes place and ends with the Bourbon dynasty taking control of Spanish rule. 1808: Napoleon invades Spain and names his brother Joseph Bonaparte as King of Spain. 1808-1813: The Peninsular War, or the War of Spanish Independence, is fought ending with Spain defeating Napoleon. 1812: The first Spanish Constitution is approved by the newly established Cádiz Cortes, the national legislative assembly of Spain at the time. ![]() The Second of May 1808 by Francisco Goya depicts the War of Spanish Independence, in which Spain overthrew Napoleon. |
