SPECIAL TIPS FOR YOUNGSTERS

1. Start small.
Not everyone is ready at age five or six for a performance in a large space in front of strangers. Young children can be eased into the performance process by starting in a smaller room. If a student is too nervous to play in a large recital at first, schedule a performance in the room he or she has a lesson in and invite only parents, siblings, and a friend or two. After having this first positive performance experience, most kids will be ready to play in a larger space the second time around.

2. Make it a party.
What child doesn't love a party? If a child is nervous about performing, make a fun celebration out of it. Have them dress up in their favorite outfit and plan to go out for ice cream or to a favorite restaurant after the event. Focusing on the fun aspects of the event can help children feel comfortable and excited about performing instead of nervous.
