What is the Bloomingdale
Music Access Project? The Bloomingdale Music Access Project (MAP) is a preparatory program for youths living in under-served communities in New York City. Its purpose is to provide these youths with the education necessary to qualify them for acceptance to a conservatory, university, or college for advanced music training. The Bloomingdale MAP program is a comprehensive three-year program of intensive musical training. The curriculum, through its emphasis on building strong applied music skills and practical life skills, prepares MAP students for advanced study in music, or another discipline. MAP students will have classes in theory and ear training, chamber music, the biweekly MAP Forum program of master classes, lecture demonstrations, and musical guests, participation in the Bloomingdale Chamber Orchestra, and private lessons on their major instrument. MAP students are expected to attend at least three days a week after school and will regularly be scheduled for concert on campus and at concerts in the community. ![]() Goals of the Program The goal of the program is to reinforce each student's strengths and to address areas of weakness of preparation. Among the colleges attended by previous MAP graduates are Cornell University, Eastman School of Music, Hunter College, Indiana University, Manhattan School of Music, University of Michigan, Montclair State University, New York University, University of Rochester, Rutgers University, Skidmore College, State University of New York at Purchase, and Yale University. |
