The idea of Form is one of the most fundamental, yet one of the most elusive in the study of music. We take a survey of musical forms from a wide range of genres and time periods, and discuss their role in the music.

What you will learn

Students studying all styles at Bloomingdale will benefit from learning about Form. Examples will be drawn from folk and traditional music and song; Pop music from all eras and styles, with a specific emphasis on Jazz, Blues and American popular song (Stephen Foster through contemporary Broadway) and Traditional Classical forms: Sonata form, 4-movement Symphony, dance forms.

STRUCTURAL HEARING

Students will expereince hearing and appreciating form, on both the smallest and largest levels, will be emphasized.

MUSIC APPRECIATION

General music appreciation skills will be needed and engaged at every class: meter, melody, rhythm, pitch, harmony, orchestration.

ELEMENT DEISCERNMENT

Strengthens the ability to discern fundamental musical elements regardless of genre or time period.
