What you will learn

“Brass Unbound” takes its inspiration from a book of the same name, a survey of wildly divergent descendants of the British brass band tradition from around the world. In addition to incorporating local melodies and genres, brass bands adapted to local customs, practices and needs (hymn tunes! party and parade bands! all-bamboo brass bands in Indonesia!). This course will cover music from Great Britain, the United States, West Africa, Eastern Europe/the Balkans, Indonesia, India and Nepal. Endlessly exciting and fascinating, this music appeals not only to a sense of the “exotic” but to our universal sense of melody and groove.

ACCESSIBLE

Truly cross-cultural, this class takes music and music practice knowledge that anyonecan access and relates it to a very broad range of (mostly) unfamiliar musical and cultural terrain. Only the most basic music appreciation skills will be required.

CULTURE AND HISTORY

A welcoming, yet deep introduction to thinking about music *as* culture and history for those unfamiliar with ethnomusicology or "world music", or unused to approaching music from a "nuts and bolts" perspective.

NOT JUST A LECTURE

Academic and historical content balanced with outrageously fun and exciting music mixed in!
