Fundamentals of Composition for Adults*

Fundamentals of composition for adults is a hands-on program that focuses on the creative application of the elements of music to guide and encourage students to find their own voice. Although a basic understanding of music fundamentals is helpful, such as the difference between melody and harmony, no experience in composition is required.

Utilizing an understanding of music theory and adding on concepts of music creation, students will begin to build their own musical works in a classroom setting.

Understand the intricacies of what makes a melody work in terms of contour, use of patterns, harmonic content, rhythmic placement, and more.

How to create chord progressions that tell/support a story

The chords that support your melodies can completely alter, transform or surprise the experience of hearing the melody. Learn how chord progressions help develop a narrative and provide context.

How to use musical form to organize, develop, and present all your musical ideas

Explore the different ways to organize and present the musical materials in your composition. Musical form is the 'bigger picture' of your compositions and understanding it is fundamental in bringing the material to life.
