Garageband: Composing and Recording Music

Many students have access to a great composition and recording environment right at their fingertips in their Mac computer or their iPad, but many have never even opened it or learned how to use it! This course aims to teach students how to unlock their creativity as budding composers by teaching them the tools and basics of computer audio!

What you will learn

This course covers a lot of questions about recording and audio principles —what is sound, and what do computers think it is? Students will learn how to record their own voice or instrument, and also learn how to edit music with a virtual instrument — the keyboard on their own computer or tablet. They will also learn how to edit mistakes, add drums, and structure a short piece, or how to create a piece from the snippets that come with garageband. *The only requirement is ownership of an Apple device and the free Garageband software.

Composition

Composition can be a fun, playful process, and I might already have the equipment to bring my ideas to life!

RECORDING BASICS

The difference between audio and midi in the computer, and how to create and edit both.

SPRINGBOARD

Students can take this as a beginning running start into learning about making music with the computer.
