We will also study how these remarkable musicians bring elements from folk music, jazz, and popular tunes to their compositions.

EXPANSION OF KNOWLEDGE

Students will discover the cultural connections, music influences, style revolutions behind the great music and musicians. I will provide the social and historical information of each composer when they lived or worked in New York, music example analysis (I will curate a playlist for each class with recordings from outstanding preforming artists; whenever it is helpful, I will demonstrate certain excerpts in class for students to better understand the music concept).

PLAYING

Students are invited to play or sight-read excerpts or complete pieces (either instrument or voice) representing certain styles and elements of each composer. We will have discussion in every class, students are more than welcome to share their thoughts, feelings and ideas. I will ask for volunteers who would like to perform one or two pieces from a composer in New York, if there are enough volunteers, we will put a virtual performance together to conclude our class.
