Song Analysis*

An in-depth look at the secrets ‘under the hood’ of masterful songwriting. Designed as a follow-up to our theory classes, students will experience and understand how master songwriters and composers use, or take liberties with, different elements of music theory. Songs from different eras and cultures with the option to analyze music chosen by students as well.

What you will learn

Music Theory, listening analyzation and deeper understanding of the laters within music – this class will provide you with a better sense of what music is built through and how it breaks down.

How to analyze harmony and melody.

Learn to identify and understand a variety of chord progressions, and how they support different types of melodies.

Understand increasing levels of harmony.

Understand the fundamental structures from which more complex structures can be built.

Observe how harmonic conventions change across cultures, genres and time periods.

Become aware of the flexibility of the musical materials used through analysis of a diverse range of musical examples.
