Vocal Percussion and Rhythm Workshop

Using vocal percussion techniques from the traditional music of India and the Middle East in combination with walking and clapping, we’ll use our body’s built in instruments to confidently create and improvise upon rhythms. The rhythmic techniques in this workshop can be applied to the study of any instrument and will improve your internal sense of beat and time keeping.

What you will learn

In this four week course we’ll begin by learning how to keep a strong steady beat in our body through stepping and clapping. We’ll focus on common rhythmic cycles of 3 and 4 beats. As we gain confidence in our ability to hold a steady beat, we’ll use the vocal percussion syllables of India and the Middle East to learn traditional rhythms as well as build our own. I will use call and response to introduce concepts, but we’ll also dive into some basic notation so you can begin to write down your own ideas. Each week, participants will have a short rhythm to practice for the next class. As we progress, we will combine our voice with walking in place and clapping to create more complex polyrhythms. No prior musical experience necessary! *Egg Shaker required for participation.
