Applied Jazz Improvisation is an overview of the fundamentals of jazz improvisation in an interactive combo setting. Musical concepts will be discussed and demonstrated, then applied immediately to common jazz forms and styles.

What you will learn

Topics will include chord/scale theory, developing rhythmic time/feel, maintaining form, arpeggios, blues, and basic pentatonic usage, dominant chords, and the ii-V-I progression. All instruments welcome.

PREREQUISITES

Students learn to enjoy the process of improvising by building familiarity and confidence with the class materials. We employ extended time in a comfortable small-ensemble setting to acquire a skill set for improvising. The lessons are used right away in practice. We use this improvising “toolkit” to help spur ideas and attain a sense of flow while playing.

MUSIC THEORY

Students gain a working knowledge of jazz-based music theory via scales/modes, harmony, rhythm, stylistic devices, and common practice.
