What you will learn

Students in Applied Jazz Improv will experiment with a hands-on-instrument approach, they explore jazz standards and improvization while also learning how to speak with their fellow musicians.

Improvisation

Students learn to enjoy the process of improvising by building familiarity and confidence with the class materials. We employ extended time in a comfortable small-ensemble setting to acquire a skill set for improvising. The lessons are used right away in practice. We use this improvising “toolkit” to help spur ideas and attain a sense of flow while playing.

Music Theory

Students gain a working knowledge of jazz-based music theory via scales/modes, harmony, rhythm, stylistic devices, and common practice.

In-Class Play

In this class, we play! We discuss concepts only long enough to start putting the material into our playing. All lessons are demonstrated by the instructor and instruments are out and ready to play.
