What you will learn

Participants will explore a broad range of repertoire, theory, techniques, and jazz history alongside their peers through a daily regimen of active listening sessions, small group sectionals and rehearsals, private coachings, seminars, and master classes. The symposium will feature jam sessions, concerts by faculty artists, and will culminate in a student concert open to all participants.

ACTIVE LISTENING SESSIONS

Led by different faculty throughout the week, these sessions will challenge participants with disciplined and focused listening as we explore both familiar and new artists of the jazz lineage while reviewing the standard conventions of jazz arrangements.

SMALL GROUPS

Participants will be placed in small ensemble groups to arrange, develop and rehearse repertoire over the course of the week with faculty coaching.

MASTERCLASSES

Each participant will take part in an intensive masterclass with a member of the faculty, an invaluable experience that combines live instruction and coaching with the experience of performing in front of an audience.

THEORY SESSIONS

Participants will be grouped according to experience to develop essential musical skills with an eye toward practical application, including greater familiarity with scales and keys, basic jazz piano skills, and the ability to learn tunes aurally.

INTERACTIVE SESSIONS

Faculty will lead interactive seminars exploring diverse topics in jazz, including artist profiles and examinations of pivotal moments in jazz’s musical and cultural development.

PRIVATE COACHINGS

Every participant will receive a dedicated private coaching with one of Bloomingdale’s jazz faculty.

FACULTY CONCERTS

Evening faculty concerts offer participants the change to observe, up close, the material that they’re studying performed at a professional level. A Q&A session will follow, with both in-person or streaming attendees welcome.

JAM SESSIONS

Participants will have the chance to apply newly acquired skills through jam sessions with their peers overseen by faculty.
