What you will learn

Students will study the birth of opera and explore its popularity through the ages. Students will learn how to attend and appreciate the opera and will understand why it is still performed and thriving in modern society. Basic understanding of musical terms and ideas is helpful, but no prior experience is required.  By the end of the course, students will recognize how they would like to be involved in opera moving forward, whether that be center stage as an opera singer, in the orchestra as an instrumentalist, backstage as a costume designer, or equally as important, a member of the audience.

Opera History

We will take a look at opera’s greatest composers from Mozart to Rossini to Verdi, identify the key languages including French, Italian, and German, and understand the important characteristics which set opera apart from every other art form.

REPERTOIRE

Students will develop acute listening skills through watching and hearing excerpts from some of opera’s greatest productions. Students will recognize key elements including musical eras, voice types, ensembles, and names of composers and performers. We will also explore non-musical elements such as plot, drama, set, staging, costumes, and more.

APPRECIATION

Once students understand important characteristics about the world of opera, guided discussion will allow students to take this knowledge to the next level, developing their own unique preferences and opinions.
