Daniel Lamas

Teaches: Chamber Music, Viola, Violin

“My philosophy as a teacher is to instruct with care and nurturing. I believe that each student is an aspiring artist and must be nurtured as such. They must be taught not only how to be a proficient musician, but how to live as an artist. This is my objective with each and every student I work with.”

Violinist/Violist Daniel Lamas is from Santiago, Chile and grew up in Miami, Florida. He moved to New York City to study at The Manhattan School of Music. As a performer he enjoys playing music from various periods. “Even though I’ve always excelled at playing the heavy romantic literature, I have also been fascinated by early and unknown baroque works as well as discovering and premiering contemporary works. I’m kind of at the polar extremes of the musical spectrum.” He particularly enjoys playing the chamber music of Mozart, Beethoven, and Bartok.

Daniel was trained in the Ivan Galamian school of violin playing and the Karen Tuttle school of viola playing. He completed his studies at The Manhattan School of Music and the Paris Conservatoire. He has been teaching for the last 10 years and has worked with students of all ages. “I have worked with students from all walks of life; from elementary school children to undergraduate students, to adult amateurs and semi pros. I specialize in working with students to develop a solid technical and musical understanding through creating a specialized and personal program for each student.”

Daniel’s teaching philosophy is deeply influenced by his own studies with some of the great teachers of our day. “My philosophy as a teacher is to instruct with care and nurturing. I believe that each student is an aspiring artist and must be nurtured as such. They must be taught not only how to be a proficient musician, but how to live as an artist. This is my objective with each and every student I work with.”

When Daniel is not performing or teaching he enjoys cooking and trying out the recipes of Gordon Ramsey.
