Percussionist Mark Katsaounis is originally from Hartford, Connecticut and moved to New York City to pursue his Master’s Degree.
Mark was drawn to percussion at a very young age, starting with fourth grade band. He enjoyed playing drum set to rock and pop albums and in high school he discovered jazz and contemporary chamber music.
He enjoys a variety of musical styles. “I love crossover artists that combine multiple traditions. I’m also drawn to minimalism because if forces us to listen deeply.” In recent years he has also been composing and accompanying for modern dance. As a player, he prefers small group work and playing for theater and dance.
As a teacher, he stresses fundamental musical skills. “I like to give my students a solid foundation in fundamentals. A good foundation in rhythm, reading and stick control can launch you in any direction you want to go. Ultimately, I hope to equip my students with the skills, confidence, and curiosity to become lifelong musicians.”
When Mark is not performing or teaching he also enjoys hiking, cooking, and traveling.
