“The most important thing in music is listening. Learning about who the students are, where they are, where they want to go, and the way they learn guides my decisions as a teacher. I love being able to cover a wide variety of styles, and like to promote good technique and ear training.”
Guitar faculty member Sebastián Cruz grew up in Bogotá Colombia and has performed in several distinguished venues including the Konzerthaus, Mozart-Saal Vienna, A-Trane Jazz Club Berlin, Jazz al Parque Festival Colombia, the Hue Festival Hue in Vietnam, and in New York City at the Highline Ballroom and Central Park Summer Stage. He has recorded for the Adventure Music and Chonta labels. In addition to performing, Sebastián has composed for theater, dance, and film and has received awards from the Meet The Composer’s Van Lier Fellowship 2010 and the ASCAP Louis Dreyfus Warner/Chappell award in 2002.
Sebastián’s musical interests include jazz, classical, and traditional music from around the world. In particular, he enjoys Latin American traditions including Colombian Cumbia, Peruvian Waltz and Landó, Brasilian Bossa Nova, Cuban son, and boleros.
As an educator, Sabastián has taught at Columbia University, Brooklyn Conservatory, and the Brooklyn Guitar School. He also taught at the Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music in South India, developing a guitar curriculum as well as teaching classes in composition and arranging.
