Bloomingdale’s Free Faculty Concert Series takes place most Fridays at 7pm in our David Greer Concert Hall. These events are free and open to the public.

2025 - 2026 FACULTY CONCERT Season

For over 40 years Bloomingdale has presented its faculty, as well as guest artists, in concerts including classical music, jazz, and world music. Bloomingdale’s Free Faculty Concert Series has established itself a vital part of the musical life of the Upper West Side, taking place most Fridays at 7pm in Bloomingdale’s David Greer Concert Hall. 2024-2025 Faculty Concert Season

Tribute to Joe Ford

October 10th, 2025 | 7:00 P.M.
David Greer Recital Hall

This concert is a tribute to the life of James Allen "Joe" Ford, Jr. who passed away on May 26, 2025. Joe worked closely together with Micheal Cochrane for many years and was a member of Michael’s cooperative group, Lines Of Reason. He played on two Grammy winning albums and three Grammy nominated albums. In 2016 he received the Jazz Legacy Award. Featuring Michael Cochrane, keys; Eli Asher, trumpet; Julien Hucq, alto sax; Calvin Hill, bass; Steve Johns, drums.

125 COPLAND! BSM BIRTHDAY CONCERT

November 13th, 2025 | 7:00 P.M.
Broadway Presbyterian Church

In celebration of Aaron Copland’s 125th anniversary, this program will feature four major works that reveal the brilliance and originality of one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. The concert will include selections from his ballet score Billy the Kid and his song cycle Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson, the Concerto for Clarinet, and his festive El Salón Mexico featuring the Bloomingdale Faculty Chamber Ensemble conducted by Conrad Chu.

THOMAS LAUBHAN JAZZ DUO ALBUM RELEASE - ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE

This performance celebrates the release of Almost Like Being In Love, the debut album from jazz duo Thomas Laubhan and Silvan Joray. Featuring a curated selection of jazz standards, the album centers on themes of love and connection, offering fresh interpretations of classic melodies.

bowling with mozart

December 5th, 2025 | 7:00 P.M.

Kegelstatt is German for a nine-pin-bowling alley. The sublime trio Mozart composed for viola, clarinet and piano bears this title because it is believed that Mozart conceived it while playing rounds of bowling. This concert will feature the Kegelstatt Trio along with masterpieces by Mozart for solo piano. Featuring Roberto Hidalgo, piano; Magldalena Garandza, clarinet; and Gloria Lam, violin.

This concert features a Bloomingdale faculty wind quintet in a program that highlights the connection between sound and physical motion, bringing together works that are rhythmically driven, expressively dynamic, and culturally vibrant. Music by Valerie Coleman, Alyssa Morris, and Paquito D’Rivera will be featured. Featuring Magdalena Garandza, clarinet; Justin Lee, flute; Elizabeth Hebert, oboe; Atao Liu, bassoon; and Lisa Pike, horn.

Faculty members Juan Diego Villalobos and Edu Gutterres present a concert of Brazilian and Venezuelan classics for marimba/vibraphone and guitar, showcasing the richness of each nationality and the sonic landscapes the music evokes. Featuring Juan Diego Villalobos, vibraphone/marimba; and Eduardo Gutterres, guitar.

salon echoes: schubert and beyond

Step into the intimacy of Schubert’s Viennese salon with an evening of lyrical piano music, beloved lieder, and the joyful Trout Quintet. Paired with the haunting contemporary soundscape of Missy Mazzoli’s A Thousand Tongues, this program expresses musical romantic longing through both timeless masterpieces and modern voices. Featuring Allison Lander, piano; Christine Browning, soprano; Rhiannon Banderdt, violin; Daniel Lamas, viola; Molly Aronson, cello; and Rebekah Greene, double bass.

The works in this program all have a connection to various types of love stories. You will hear music for clarinet, violin, and piano by Johannes Brahms, Leah Finck, and Edward Knight in a program that is sure to warm your heart. Featuring Danny Mui, clarinet; Naho Parrini, violin; and Weiwei Zhai, piano.

from rio with groove: brazilian jazz rewind

Step into the golden era of Brazilian music — a sound that reshaped American jazz in the 1960s and 1970s and left an enduring mark on its culture. This concert explores the rich interplay between Brazil’s rhythmic soul and the adventurous spirit of jazz, from the sensual sway of bossa nova to bold and contemporary reinterpretations.

This program features four recent works for piano and percussion, each created in close collaboration with the composers. Interwoven with live and fixed electronic elements, the concert showcases a set of uniquely crafted pieces—each exploring a distinct sonic world and highlighting the rich, expressive potential of contemporary percussion and piano. Featuring Josh Perry, percussion; and Yumi Suehiro, piano.

Beethoven’s sense of concise and compact musical statement was clearly illustrated in the Piano Sonata Op. 78 – a work which he described himself as “now there’s a sonata!” Directness combined with broader ranges of sonority inspired shorter, power-packed works by Chopin and Schubert in music that defined the great era of romanticism. Featuring Monica Verona, piano.

when the market crashed: from modernity to reminiscence

The "Roaring Twenties" epitomized a time of embracing and celebrating everything new and exciting. This program celebrates music from that era by composers from all corners of the world including Erwin Schulhoff’s “Hot" Sonata, Paul Hindemith’s Trio, Charles Martin Loeffler’s The Lone Prairie, and Alexander Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto.

This program reflects two pillars of faculty member José Maldonado’s artistic work: a passion for the study and performance of early guitar repertoire, and a deep commitment to preserving and interpreting the music of his homeland, Puerto Rico. José will perform solo works by J.S. Bach, D.Scarlatti, Mauro Giuliani, Juan Sorroche, Rafael Hernández, and Leonardo Egúrbida. Featuring José Maldonado, guitar.

Beethoven and Strauss

May 22nd, 2026 | 7:00 P.M.

Violinist Rolf Schulte and pianist Judith Olson present a concert of two major works of the chamber music repertoire. Beethoven’s dramatic and turbulent Violin Sonata in C minor, written when the composer was forced to accept the inevitability of his deafness. Richard Strauss wrote his last major chamber work, the Violin Sonata, at the age of 23. The music is brimming with youthful ardor and passion and was to be his last major chamber piece before he devoted his career to orchestral tone poems and operas.
