In Memory of Arthur Sachs, Former Board President of Bloomingdale School of Music

We are deeply saddened to share that Arthur Sachs, who was President of the Board of Directors of the Bloomingdale School of Music for many years, passed away on April 17.  He and his wife Mary Hawkins Sachs were leaders of the school during the late 1980s and 1990s, a time of critical transition for Bloomingdale.  Along with Lawrence Davis, who they helped bring in as Executive Director, Art consolidated the school’s position as an important presence in the cultural fabric of New York.  Art loved to attend student concerts and could be seen in the audience long after his days on the board.

SACHS–Arthur G., 79, of the Upper West Side, formerly also of Washington, Ct., on April 17, 2021, after living with the effects of a glioblastoma for six and a half years. Mary Hawkins Sachs, his wife of 52 years, survives him, as do his sons, Andrew, Christopher, and Timothy; Andrew’s wife, Hagar Harpak, and their two children; Art’s siblings, Samuel II, Cecily, and Stephen, and their families; and cousins. Art grew up in Pound Ridge and attended New Canaan Country, Middlesex, Harvard, and Harvard Business. He worked in magazine publishing with Scientific American, Time magazine worldwide, and others; and as a financial advisor with Penn Mutual and MetLife. He served as president or treasurer of the board of West Side Montessori; Farm and Wilderness Camps; Bloomingdale School of Music; and his co-op; and he sang with the University Glee Club. No flowers, please; memorial donations to Church of the Heavenly Rest (heavenlyrest.org), whose community deeply supported Art and Mary during Art’s illness. You may direct its purpose, such as pastoral care; community service, including prison reentry support; music; or general use. Memorial service at the church in the fall.
