“If I cannot fly, let me sing.” — Stephen Sondheim
Joseph London is a Broadway performer, vocalist, educator, and arts administrator whose career spans opera, musical theatre, and higher education. Born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, he earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. He was later invited to join the prestigious Juilliard Opera Center as a Guest Artist, where he continued his studies with renowned voice teacher Marlena Malas.
While at Juilliard, Joseph won both the Chicago District and Central Regional rounds of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. His early operatic credits include performances with Chicago Opera Theater, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and leading roles in productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Dido and Aeneas, Le Rossignol, L’incoronazione di Poppea, Agrippina, and The Rake’s Progress. Following his academic training, Joseph served as Artistic Manager of the internationally acclaimed Ravinia Festival before embarking on a successful performing career. He spent five years performing aboard the Allure of the Seas with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line portraying Mary Sunshine in CHICAGO. He later toured nationally with CHICAGO as Mary Sunshine and CATS as Old Deuteronomy and has appeared regionally in productions including Sweeney Todd, Avenue Q, Beauty and the Beast, and CHICAGO.
In 2018, Joseph made his Broadway debut as Mary Sunshine in CHICAGO. Shortly thereafter, Tony Award-winning director Walter Bobbie invited him to become the full-time standby for both Mary Sunshine and Amos Hart (Mr. Cellophane), making him the first and only actor in Broadway history to perform both roles in the production. He recently celebrated eight years with CHICAGO, having performed Mary Sunshine more than 300 times and Amos Hart more than 150 times on Broadway.
In addition to his stage work, Joseph has appeared in recital and concert performances throughout New York, Chicago, San Diego, Italy, and beyond. This August, he will perform CHICAGO in concert with the Utah Symphony under the baton of renowned conductor Rob Fisher, portraying both Mary Sunshine and Amos Hart in the same performance.
Joseph’s commitment to arts education extends beyond the studio and stage. From 2015 to 2018, he served as Adjunct Professor of Musical Theatre Voice at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, where he mentored and trained emerging performers. His collegiate teaching experience, combined with his extensive professional career, informs a practical and holistic approach to vocal instruction that bridges the gap between classroom training and professional performance.
As a voice teacher, Joseph combines world-class conservatory training with extensive professional experience. He is passionate about working with singers at every stage of development, from beginners preparing their first 16-bar audition cut to advanced students preparing juries, roles, and professional auditions. His teaching focuses on developing healthy vocal technique, artistic confidence, and a collaborative work ethic while connecting vocal pedagogy to the practical realities of rehearsal and
performance. His goal is to cultivate reliable and healthy singing habits, foster artistic confidence, and provide students with practical tools they can apply immediately in the rehearsal room and on stage, in a supportive, inclusive, and safe learning environment.
