Native New Yorker and Bloomingdale alumna Margalit Cantor began studying cello when she was eight years old. “My mom thought since I liked singing so much, I would also enjoy playing an instrument. I went to my first lesson and never looked back! I loved the sound of the cello and feel like I can sing through the instrument.”

“I want to share my love of music with my students and help them find their own voice through the cello,” says Margo of her passion for teaching. While she instills a strong technical foundation in all of her students, she also “likes to have fun!” Margo teaches students as young as 4 through adult. “With young students, I like to internalize the music by singing and dancing around the room and by playing games. With older students I love to play duets. As a teacher it is my goal to adapt to the changing needs and musical tastes of each student and work on the music they feel passionate about.”

Along with performing solo recitals, Margo loves performing with other musicians, both in orchestral and chamber music settings and has participated in many summer orchestra and chamber festivals including Aspen and Tanglewood. While she enjoys a wide range of music, Margo has “a special love for the music of Bach.” This led her to explore the baroque cello and Margo frequently performs with period ensembles. Margo counts her teachers, Janos Starker, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Emilio Colon, and Stanley Ritchie, as her primary musical influences. “I am grateful to them for their teaching and inspiration.” In her free time she enjoys hiking, walks in the park, yoga, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
