What You Need to Know

BTP is our advanced training track for motivated music students looking to deepen their skills through performance, collaboration, and musicianship.

Who it's for

Students with 1–2 years of private study on their primary instrument or voice.

  • Current BSM students: a recommendation from your private teacher that you're ready for a comprehensive program, including biannual juries and extra performances.
  • New to BSM: a conversation and playing assessment with the BTP coordinator for your instrument.

What it costs

A $40 registration fee and $200 program fee, plus tuition discounted on a sliding scale based on household income. Enroll in all three components and save an additional 10%. Estimate your tuition

When to apply

  • Application deadline: applications are accepted throughout the school year.
  • Auditions: scheduled individually with your program coordinator. These are placement auditions and do not determine acceptance.

How BTP Works

Now in its updated format, BTP supports student growth while expanding access and flexibility. Students follow a schedule modeled after that of a developing professional musician, enrolling in 2–3 components based on their choice and placement by coordinators.

Required

Private Lesson

  • 45 or 60 minutes a week (you choose the length)
  • With a faculty member of your choosing
  • Expect to practice one hour daily
  • Prepare at least two contrasting solo pieces and perform in biannual juries

  • At least one ensemble or chamber group every semester
  • Choose 8-week chamber, 17-week chamber, 17-week large ensemble, or a combination
  • Ensemble options vary by instrument (see below)

Online Music Theory

  • Optional, but strongly encouraged
  • A placement test puts your child in the right class for their level
  • Weekly 45-minute class with lecture and ear training
  • Online Music Theory 101, 102 & 103
  • Enroll in all three components and get an additional 10% off tuition

Everyone accepted into BTP receives a tuition discount. Here's how it adds up:

  • $40 registration fee + $200 program fee. The program fee supports guest artist masterclasses, recital performances, performance evaluations (juries), and chamber and ensemble concerts
  • Sliding-scale discount based on household income
  • An additional 10% off when you enroll in all three components (private lesson, ensemble, and music theory)

After your placement audition, our registration team will reach out with your tuition estimate and to plan your schedule.

Placement

Current BSM students also need a recommendation from their private teacher. New students have a conversation and playing assessment with the coordinator. Placement auditions do not determine acceptance.
