Shaking Strings Up – Rocking the Boat

April 3 & 10 – An exciting introduction to the world of improvisation. Through individual and ensemble variation and decision-making exercises, students explore their own creativity on their instrument.

Sunday April 3

11am-12pm Workshop I: Introduction to Variation: “Lightly Row Row Row”

In this workshop student will learn variations on “Lightly Row” and “Row Row Row Your Boat” with traditional and extended techniques. There will be a structured group improv on these themes using the techniques learned.

Sunday April 10

11am-12pm Workshop II: Making Decisions
Students build on techniques and get an introduction to communicative roles – eg. leader/follower, initiator/responder.

12pm-12:30pm: Lunch Break – Students are asked to bring a lunch; BSM will provide juice and water.

12:30pm-1:30pm: Sharing Hour: Rocking the Boat
Students will perform pieces they’ve been working on in their lessons with a creative twist- they will add techniques of their own, and ones they’ve learned in the workshops. The sharing hour will finish with a group performance of the “Lightly Row Row Row Your Boat” Improv.
