At Bloomingdale School of Music Early Education classes are educational and fun for both students and parents. With experienced and caring instructors the school conducts age-appropriate activities with the goal of introducing young children to basic musical concepts. Motor control and inner hearing are also developed, enabling a natural transition to instrumental lessons. At BSM, teachers are musicians. They are trained and certified in early childhood educational methods and are also instrumentalists who complement their teaching with musical demonstrations. Children develop at different rates, particularly when they are very young. The motor skills of a six month old are different from a 20 month old. Therefore, classes are structured to specific age groups. Bloomingdale School of Music’s Early Childhood Program builds skills from one class to the next, preparing each child for instrumental instruction.

I think a special moment for me was hearing my husband singing along with our daughter one of the songs they learned together in Shoshana’s class. -BSM Parent

About the Faculty Artists – Shoshana Vogel and Aaron Butler

Shoshana Vogel started playing the violin at age 5 and moved onto clarinet at 9, settling on classical guitar studies at 12 with voice as her final choice of musical expression. Ms. Vogel completed her Bachelor’s Degree at U.C. Berkley in Musicology and her Master’s Degree from at U.C.L.A. in World Arts and Cultures. Her teaching philosophy is one rooted in her interest in sharing her own appreciation and love of music. “I want to be a part of instilling a sense of joy in music, and giving that to children seems like a great gift to share. I believe children can direct their own sense of wonder if given the tools, especially as young learners. As a teacher, I hope to guide children towards a lifetime of discovery and play and development through music. I think music gives us pathways on which to travel throughout life. I love that the Orff approach of opening children up to music starts with their whole selves and with their inherent creativity”

Following graduate studies at the Longy School of Music in Boston, Aaron Butlermoved to New York to practice the Dalcroze methodology, which is an approach to music education involving an understanding of music – its fundamental concepts, its expressive meanings, and its deep connections to other arts and human activities–incorporating rhythmic movement, aural training, and physical, vocal and instrumental improvisation. A dedicated early childhood teacher, he conducts many Dalcroze classes for children as young as age 2. He has developed and inherited numerous strategies, songs, images, stories and games to accommodate the different learning styles found throughout early childhood. His classes are lively and learner-centered with an emphasis on experience before analysis and he believes that improvisation is central to musical fluency.
