Tia Roper was born and raised in Queens, New York. She began her flute studies at the age of ten after members of the school band came to her class to demonstrate several different instruments. “I fell in love with the flute immediately.” Tia later attended LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and the Juilliard Pre-College program.

“When teaching, I completely focus on the student, giving full attention to the development and improvement of their skill while maintaining a fun learning environment,” says Tia of her pedagogical approach. With younger children, Tia focuses on positive reinforcement. “I begin by approaching the visual aspect of the instrument…connecting the fingers and keys, hand/eye coordination and the actual creation of the sound.”

Tia also works with adults, customizing a lesson plan “based on their aspirations. If they wanted to be able to learn the flute for personal enjoyment, I would select a collection of studies and music that they are very interested in pursuing. If they wanted to be able to play along with their community band or church choir, I would emphasize the literature of that genre.” With all students, however, Tia emphasizes that music making should be an enjoyable experience.

Tia performs often in solo recitals and as a member of chamber and orchestral ensembles. As a winner of the 2004-05 Artist International competition, Tia presented a recital at Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in April 2005. In 2005–2006 Tia will be featured in the Trinity Church Conerts at One series.
