What you will learn

Each class in this lecture series will feature live demonstrations of musical concepts, discussion, and recorded listening examples. These courses will give you tools and context to better appreciate the magical world of music.

Classes meet weekly on Thursday evenings and each four-week section can be taken alone or in conjunction with the rest of the series.

LEONARD BERNSTEIN: AN AMERICAN MAESTRO | MAR 3 - MAR 28

Leonard Bernstein was an American icon who brought classical music to audiences young and old with a refreshed vigor and excitement. This class will explore some of his own masterpieces such as West Side Story and Fancy Free as well as his interpretations of Gustav Mahler, Maurice Ravel, and Aaron Copland, among others.

THE FASCINATING RHYTHMS OF GEORGE GERSHWIN | APR 4 - MAY 2

One of the most famous Upper West Side residents in New York history, George Gershwin defined in sound the jazzy urban essence of the city. This class will explore his famous Rhapsody in Blue, his magnum opus Porgy and Bess, as well as his many great songs from his Tin Pan Alley days.

HARMONIOUS COLLABORATIONS: ESSENTIAL PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN COMPOSERS AND PERFORMERS | MAY 9 - MAY 30

Every great composer needs great performers to bring their music to the world. This class will explore some of those unique and important relationships including Robert and Clara Shumann, Brahms and Joseph Joachim, & Stephen Sondheim and Bernadette Peters.
