Hayden Smith is an American tenor and voice teacher whose teaching is rooted in the principles of Italian bel canto singing — a classical approach that builds healthy, flexible technique applicable to any musical style or genre. He joins the voice faculty at the Bloomingdale School of Music after years of active performing and private teaching in New York City.
On stage, Hayden has performed with Opera Baltimore, Annapolis Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, Wolf Trap Opera, The Glimmerglass Festival, Des Moines Metro Opera, and American Lyric Theatre, and has sung at Carnegie Hall. He is a recognizee of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition and holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he studied with soprano Ana María Martínez, and a Bachelor of Music from Temple University.
In the studio, Hayden specializes in working with teenagers and adults at every stage of their vocal journey — from serious pre-college students preparing for conservatory and undergraduate auditions to adults returning to singing or exploring it for the first time. His teaching is centered on developing vocal flexibility, giving students the technical freedom to move confidently across styles, repertoire, and whatever musical goals they bring to the room. His students have gone on to gain acceptance at top conservatories and music undergraduate programs across the country.
