Bloomingdale’s virtual summer music classes aim to educate students and instill discipline, fun and a passion for self-expression through music.

This summer in particular, Bloomingdale offers flexible and convenient options for early childhood learners, K-12 students, and adults, in addition to opportunities for intergenerational learning and classes where no prior musical experience is necessary.

We believe music has the power to change lives and our curriculum is designed to reflect this philosophy. We offer classes for a variety of instruments and for every type of student at all skill levels.

CONVENIENT

Taking online lessons means no traveling to our school and lessons when you want them. No more lugging instruments around the city and extremely flexible options for scheduling.

ACCESSIBLE

Our online lessons are available to anyone, anywhere. The only requirements are a reliable internet connection, your instrument and a video chat software such as Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts or FaceTime.

OPTIONS AND LEVELS

From beginner classes to ensembles for advanced students, we offers options for early childhood learners, K-12 students, and adults, in addition to opportunities for intergenerational learning and classes where no prior musical experience is necessary.

BABY’S & TODDLER’S FIRST MUSIC CLASS

The first of Bloomingdale’s Early Childhood Music classes, this course introduces the world of music to babies and toddlers. Caregivers introduce musical language to their babies through singing, dancing, and play.

FAMILY MUSICAL ADVENTURES

Preschool age students explore the sounds and sights of music through responsive listening, imaginative play, movement and dancing, and song memorization. This online class focuses on fostering independent peer relations, musical games, and partner activities. Families encouraged to participate together!

MUSIC AND MOVEMENT

This class focuses on singing and dancing and introduces children to playing hand percussion instruments. Music and Movement helps develop coordination and prepares young ears for later music studies. Parents support learning by attending the class and extending musical study at home.

MUSICAL ADVENTURES

In this class students unleash their creative potential and develop more advanced musical skills through song, creative movement, listening, and playing percussion instruments. The first of our drop off classes, students experience the class independently without a caregiver.

ONLINE DALCROZE CLASS

Bloomingdale’s Dalcroze specialist Aaron Butler will present an online experience like no other for students ages 2 to 5. Each class will meet together in week one to get to know one another, learn a hello and goodbye song and have show and tell – they will meet again at the end of the summer as well.

SING ALONG WITH MISS PATTI | ONLINE DROP IN CLASS

Join our Patti Onorato as we sing, dance, and play along to all of your child’s favorite tunes! Each Zoom class is unique, and ranges in styles from world music to kids’ songs and includes developmental games.
This is the perfect compliment to any of our Early Childhood offerings, providing students the opportunity to come and play together in a fun, safe musical environment.

ONLINE DROP IN CLASS- SING ALONG WITH MISS PATTI

A fun, interactive experience for students aged 3-6 with their families! Join Miss Patti for a drop in class while you’re home together. These zoom classes will be a private link e-mailed to participants for a 30 minute class. Children will be led in sing-a-long songs, focus on age-appropriate skill building and literacy building with books and song. Families can register for one class or multiple.

TRAVEL THE WORLD THROUGH MUSIC

Every culture has its own rich repertoire of beautiful music. Bloomingdale flute faculty Tereasa Payne invites young participants to explore sounds from around the world through music, movement and dance. Beginners welcome! Class will meet for three weeks with two 20-minute classes a week

Our summer jazz offerings provide a full range of everything jazz – from a jazz history course designed to inspire a greater appreciation for jazz throughout a variety of developmental periods to an ensemble class exploring repertoire in all jazz genres – bebop, post-bop, latin and Brazilian jazz.

Music Theory

Music Theory is a hands-on investigation into the fabric of music leading to a fluency in the language of music. In our age-group specific courses, students will develop a working knowledge of note-reading, key signatures, time signatures, rhythmic notation in a way that is clear, understandable, and useful.

MUSIC THEORY FOR CHILDREN – AGES 13 TO 17

Music Theory is a hands-on investigation into the fabric of music leading to a fluency in the language of music.

SUMMER GUITAR SYMPOSIUM

The BSM Guitar Symposium is an online immersive program offering guitar students the opportunity to participate in an intensive and performance-focused learning experience. The two-week symposium will be led by BSM’s classical guitar faculty: Nora Spielman, Mark Appling, Alejandro Cote, and José Maldonado. Participants with prior classical guitar experience welcome.

Students in Applied Jazz Improv will experiment with a hands-on-instrument approach, they explore jazz standards and improvization while also learning how to speak with their fellow musicians.

Ensembles

Our Summer ensembles are a fun, interactive way to get those instruments out and play with others. Our Instructors explore fun level-appropriate repertoire tailored to participants’ skill and experience levels. Each ensemble culminates in a virtual performance opportunity to but those newly acquired skills to the test.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

Our one-on-one private music lessons offer instruction for over 20 instruments. Lessons focus on individual students and offer a customized learning structure. We assess the student’s skill level and learning style to ensure the student learns the basics and will continue improving.

Music Programs

We offer in-depth programs for students ready to take on more than just a private lesson.

WE OFFER NEED-BASED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Our goal is to make music education accessible and to remove the financial barrier that may prevent students from participating. Therefore, we offer need-based financial aid to as many students as possible.
