How Do We Listen to Music?
Music + Art
Born in Canada, Janey Choi, grew up in Ontario, but moved to New York during her junior year of high school to attend The Juilliard School. She chose to study the violin at age 6 when her older sister had been recruited to play cello by a local Suzuki program. Deemed too small to begin learning cello, Janey instead began lessons on the violin.

As a teacher, Janey understands that “a balance has to be made for each student between structure/discipline and personal preferences/freedom. Everyone learns a little differently and the role of the teacher is to unlock the right channels of learning.” Janey is open to teaching children under 6, working with them to maintain their interest and focus through developing games and puzzles that help to incorporate fun into practicing time. She also works with adults, encouraging them to learn by “observing and doing rather than getting too caught up with the analytical.”

An eclectic musician, Janey enjoys the music of classical composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms as well as the contemporary sounds of U2 and Radiohead. As a performer, she enjoys ensemble playing the most, particularly the idea of working “collaboratively in more personal settings.”

Bloomingdale allows Janey to be both performer and teacher and two of her favorite experiences to date at the school, showcase both these talents. “Putting together and playing Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat was intensely exhausting and rewarding. I also love seeing my students play in Sharing Hours for their families.”

In addition to performing and teaching, Janey enjoys soccer, running, chess, watching modern dance, and of course, the Canadian national pastime, hockey. Her major influences include her teachers, family and Yoda.
