Molly McCarthy-Egan

"I like to have an open dialogue in the studio so that I can better understand what the student is feeling. I want him or her to be an equal participant in bettering his or her instrument."

"I have always loved to sing and perform, since I was very little" says Molly McCarthy-Egan about why she started studying voice. "As soon as I was old enough to start taking lessons, my parents allowed me to enroll. It's always been something I've been passionate about doing." Born in Boston, MA, Molly grew up outside of the city and moved to New York to study Voice and Vocal Pedagogy at New York University.

Molly believes in "an open dialogue in the studio so that I can better understand what the student is feeling. I want him or her to be an equal participant in bettering his or her instrument." Molly also works on building blocks of vocal technique along with focusing on the "intention of the character and the words a student is singing. The exploration of the lyrics brings a more human quality to the repertoire we choose."

Though private voice lessons are generally recommended for students age 9 or 10 and older, Molly is open to working with younger students in order to help them learn how to use their voice. "For singing, the muscles you use aren't nearly developed enough to work on complex maneuvers at a young age, but I do believe learning to sing and how to use your voice can begin at any age." Molly also enjoys working with adults.

While Molly focused on classical music as an undergraduate, she says "my heart belongs in the musical theater genre." She counts Rodgers and Hart, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim among her favorites. "The musical and lyrical language of these composers really speak to me. In every day life, I love every style of music. I definitely appreciate anything from Jazz to Pop to Country to Hip Hop to Folk."

In her free time Molly likes to read and spend time with friends. She also does volunteer work with Musicians On Call, performing for hospital patients in their rooms. "We go in and bring a song to hopefully help brighten their day and it’s certainly been brightening mine!"
