Bloomingdale makes music accessible to the community with a full season of events that are free and open to the public.

Community Music Events

Join us for our Free Faculty Concert Series, Instruments Festivals, Student Concerts and Recitals, Master Classes, Performathon, and other open house events. Most events take place at our brownstone in our state of art David Greer Recital Hall or the newly renovated Baisley Powell Elebash Salon. Bloomingdale also presents music events at other Upper West Side institutions, churches and concert halls, and outdoors in the nearby city parks.

The Music of Michael Cochrane

A program of original jazz compositions by Michael Cochrane that were recorded in 2022 at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. String Quartet Gems

This concert features two hidden gems for string quartet, the Quartet in G Major by Florence Price and the Lyric Quartet by William Grant Still. Paired with these works will be Claude Debussy’s String Quartet, considered a cornerstone of the quartet repertoire. Virtuosic Violin-Piano Collaboration: Two Sonatas and a Ballet

This concert features two Sonatas in which the violin and piano converse about many subjects and a ballet transcription in which both instruments give lively musical inspiration for storied dancing. Works will include Bach's Sonata in B minor, Beethoven's Sonata No. 8 for Piano and Violin and Stravinsky's Suite Italienne. Join us for an adult student recital ("Sharing Hour") on Thursday, January 26th at 7pm followed by a reception with wine and light bites. Internet Intermezzi II: Chamber Improv Rebooted

The events of the past two years have accelerated the development of remote collaboration technology. “An Afternoon of World Premieres” A4TY: Student Composing Project

Concert
For 18 years, Bloomingdale School of Music has maintained a special focus on introducing students (ages 7-18) to composition through our A4TY (Album for the Young) Student Composing Program. This concert will feature student compositions, ranging from solo works for piano, to works for small chamber ensembles of mixed strings, percussion and winds. The concert will also feature the premiere of a new commissioned work for violin, piano, flute and congas by composer, Mariel Mayz. "And yes, they were works of art indeed - no kiddie recital this! Professional composers, take note: This hopping center of creativity at Bloomingdale deserves national attention!" - John Deak, Founder, New York Philharmonic's Very Young Composers Program, Commenting on A4TY

Piano Project: The Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, & Water

Concert
Now in our 16th year of the Bloomingdale Piano Project Concerts, our theme which explores the natural elements of Earth, Air, Fire & Water ignites the imagination through sound illustrations.  With music from every style of the piano repertoire, the Four Elements can be heard in the floating chords of the French Impressionists to the fiery turbulence of the German Romantics to the vitality of the Spanish Dance to the soulful Russian Melody.  These are expressions of the vast piano literature that cover every area of the human experience in more than three centuries. Featuring Bloomingdale's exquisitely talented faculty and their piano students and will be held in our David Greer Recital Hall.

Bloomingdale Jazz Fest!

Concert
April is Jazz Appreciation Month! The BSM Jazz Festival is Saturday, April 22 at 3pm. The festival will feature performances from the BSM Youth Jazz Ensemble, MAP Jazz Combo and two Adult Jazz Ensembles. The event will also feature solo performances from BSM jazz students. Bloomingdale School of Music jazz ensembles are directed by Daniel Bennett, Michael Cochrane and Eli Asher. The festival will feature music of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and more. Bloomingdale School of Music students have consistently earned top ratings in the NYSSMA Jazz competition, Interlochen Jazz, and Essentially Ellington competition. The festival is free and open to the public. Food and refreshments will be provided.

23rd Annual PERFORMATHON & BBQ

Performathon is student-driven fundraising campaign which supports Bloomingdale’s scholarship fund. Students begin fundraising online and in person beginning on May 8. The campaign culminates in a marathon day of live performances at the school (“Performathon”). All are welcome to join us on site for the performances, BBQ, and crafts for kids. We believe all people who want to study music should have access! Help support Bloomingdale’s Scholarship Program and Financial Aid Program, the core of our mission to provide open access to quality music education.

Venice was the hub of musical invention and soloistic virtuosity in the baroque era. Dorian Baroque presents a program tracing the myriad of musical styles flourishing in Venice from the early 1600s to the mid-1700s with chamber music featuring two violins, cello, and harpsichord by composers Giovanni Legrenzi, Antonio Caldara, and Antonio Vivaldi.

The Forgotten Melodies of Nicolai Medtner

Pianist Roberto Hidalgo performs three richly expressive and haunting sonatas by Russian composer Nikolai Medtner. For the "Sonata-Vocalise" he will be joined by his daughter, soprano Luisa Hidalgo. 24th Annual PERFORMATHON!

Performathon is student-driven fundraising campaign which supports Bloomingdale’s scholarship fund. Students begin fundraising online and in person beginning on April 30. The campaign culminates in a marathon day of live performances at the school (“Performathon”).
